US Class 8 sales fall 18% in 10th straight month of decline

According to Wards Intelligence , U.S. retail sales of Class 8 products fell for the 10th consecutive month in May.

Sales fell 18% from 24111 units in May 2023 to 19764 units. The sales also decreased 0.2% from the 19,798 units reported in the previous month. Year-to date sales are down 14.6% from 111.723 units to 95.401 units.

Freightliner, an American brand of Daimler Truck North America claimed the largest share of the market with 6,800 trucks. This accounted for 34.4% all sales in the month. This was still a decrease of 27.4% from 9,368 in the previous year. Western Star, a DTNA-branded brand, saw the biggest increase in truck sales year-over-year of all the major brands, at 26.9%, to 935 units, from 737.

Mack Trucks sales increased by 2.6% from 1,572 units in the previous period. Volvo Trucks North America’s sales fell 5.5% from 2,471 units to 2,334 units. Mack and VTNA brands are owned by Volvo Group.

Navistar’s International brand saw a 40.9% decline in sales, from 3,232 units to 1,911 unit.

Peterbilt Motors Co. saw sales drop 6.7% from 3,501 units to 3,266. Kenworth Truck Co. sales decreased 10.1% from 3,200 to 2,876 units. Peterbilt and Kenworth belong to Paccar Inc.
