After a successful six month test, Ocean Network Express (ONE), UK and Freightliner have committed to using hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO Fuel) for all rail cargo transportation.
HVO100 fuel, which is made from waste fats and oils from the food industry as well as vegetable oil, is 100% renewable. Switching to this renewable energy from conventional diesel can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90%.
During the six-month test period, the HVO fuel saved an estimated 488 tonnes CO2 emissions.
Clive Slayford said, “We are delighted that ONE has selected HVO fuel as the fuel for their UK rail freight journeys. We are committed to being a net-zero business and reducing our environmental impact.
“We have shown our commitment to offer customers a greener option using HVO fuel, which dramatically reduces carbon emission compared to diesel or road alternatives.”
Freightliner announced a contract with ONE for five years, committing to sustainability and reducing the environmental impact. The partnership will provide seamless intermodal connections between London Gateway and Port of Southampton, as well as strategic locations in the UK using the most environmentally-friendly methods.
