Project logistics experts from DB Schenker are currently managing one of the largest logistics projects for energy transition. As part of a multimodal integrated transport concept, 876 cable drums will be transported from Kobe in Japan and Mannheim in Germany to three German locations, Emden, Wesel, and Krefeld. The cable drums will be stored at the construction site until they are needed. The cable drums will be installed in the so-called Corridor A-North of a new high-voltage network operated by Amprion. The project will allow wind power from North Sea to be used in the conurbations on the western part Germany.

Thorsten Meincke is a member of the DB Schenker Management Board for Air and Ocean Freight. He says: “DB Schenker, as the world’s largest specialist in project logistics, offers its customers the best end-to-end solution from a single provider. We have a wealth of experience in managing complex projects involving geography, time and volume. “We are proud that our experts contribute to the success of this challenging project.”

Daniel Wieland is Senior Vice President Global Projects & Industry Solutions at DB Schenker. “Our global team orchestrates this large-scale, extensive project.” Our project specialists offer our clients customized, safe and reliable services ranging from designing, planning and coordinating multimodal transportation to customs clearance and storage.

The cable drums can be up to 8 meters long and have a diameter up to 4 meters. They can weigh up to 85 tons. As part of Corridor A-North, the cables will transport wind energy from northern Germany into the metropolitan areas of North Rhine-Westphalia. This is one of the main arteries for the energy transition.

DB Schenker transports the cable drums by ocean-going vessel, from the port of Kobe in Japan to Emden or the western ports of Antwerp or Rotterdam. The cable drums are then transported to Krefeld and Wesel by inland waterway vessel. DB Schenker also transports cable drums to the interim warehouses from a second manufacturing site in Mannheim by inland waterway vessels and heavy goods vehicles.

DB Schenker provides the cable manufacturer Sumitomo with a multimodal transportation concept from a single provider. The solution covers all aspects of the logistics value chain. The solution covers the entire logistics value chain. DB Schenker’s own IT solutions for project-specific projects provide up-to date information on the entire progress of the project.
