American Trucking Associations, June 18, reported that the trucking industry saw its first increase in tonnage for this year during the month of May.

The also increased by 3.6% from the 111.9 reported in April.

Bob Costello, ATA’s Chief Economist, said that May was the first time since February 2023 when tonnage increased sequentially and compared to a year ago. “While there is no doubt that freight increased before the Memorial Day holiday it is too early to tell if this is the beginning of the long-awaited recovery for the truck freight market.”

ATA calculates the monthly tonnage index through a survey of its members. Feedback is primarily from contract freight, not spot market freight. In calculating the Index, 100 represents 2015.
