GLT’s bold move into the Caribbean Break Bulk Carrier Market

By Katie Gallagher

Great Lakes Towing Company is poised to make waves within the marine transportation industry coast-to-coast with its recent purchase of the Barge CRIMSONCLOVER from Crimson Shipping Company in Chickasaw, AL. This strategic move will not only expand GLT’s impressive service range, but also mark the beginning of a new era for cargo transportation in the Caribbean basin.

The CRIMSON CLOOVER is a 270 x 80 ft fully enclosed warehouse barge. It will be chartered by the newly established, wholly-owned subsidiary of GLT called Great Lakes East (GLE). GLE is a U.S. Jones Act compliant ocean carrier flying the U.S. GLE can cater to a wide range of cargo requirements both domestically as well as internationally.

GLE will redefine the landscape of breakbulk transport by building on Crimson Shipping’s former business. However, there will be a significant difference. GLE has moved its primary loading port from Mobile, AL to Fernandina, FL. Crimson Shipping had been based in Mobile, AL. This move places GLE at the center of maritime trade routes leading to San Juan, PR. It also offers unparalleled access to key Caribbean destinations.

GLE has begun accepting orders to embark on the inaugural voyage of its GLE in July. GLE works with the top terminal operators at the Port of Fernandina, San Juan to ensure seamless cargo handling, storage and distribution.

GLE’s commitment to efficiency and innovation is what sets it apart. GLE’s service goes beyond traditional maritime logistics by leveraging last-mile on-dock rail and strategic positioning to make it easy to access from the main highways of Northeast Florida.

GLT and GLE are navigating into new waters. One thing is certain: breakbulk barge transport to the Caribbean looks more promising than ever. GLT, its affiliates, and their blend of expertise, innovative thinking, and strategic foresight are well-positioned to offer a new service.
