Kazakhstan is facing a serious issue with grain transportation due to insufficient grain storage capacity and limited elevator capabilities, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Lack of storage facilities and locomotives causing rail congestion

According to the State Antimonopoly Committee report, in 2022, the country harvested a record grain crop of 22.1 million tons, while the total capacity of grain storage facilities was only 10.4 million tons.

This has led to significant overloading of the railway network capacity, resulting in prolonged delays and congestion on railways across the republic.

In particular, the “Grain Union of Kazakhstan” has expressed dissatisfaction with numerous breaches of contractual obligations and poor service quality from local railway companies.

Traders attribute the main causes of the situation to a shortage of switching and mainline locomotives.

Furthermore, train build-ups at junction stations are exacerbated by increasing transport volumes and priority given to transit cargoes.
