Bootstrapping is often the first thing that comes to mind for many founders.

So Unfunded is a new podcast from tech writer Joan Westenberg that will be essential listening for those who want to keep their cap table clean.

Westenberg collaborated with The Day One Network – the team behind – to produce a podcast series about the history of Australia’s startup ecosystem.

She wanted to share the stories of entrepreneurs who built their businesses without relying on external funding or venture capital.

“Unfunded” celebrates the DIY spirit and the determination of entrepreneurs who launch and grow businesses on their terms, said Westenberg.

“Each Episode features interviews with successful entrepreneurs who share their journeys in navigating startup growth, developing innovative products, locating target customers, and achieving profit without external funding.”

In the first episode of the series, Westenberg sits with Sheree Rubinstein, the founder and CEO of One Roof, an innovative co-working space for women-led businesses.

Rubinstein shares with us her experience of pivoting to a digital platform after Covid. She offers valuable insights into adaptability, community-building, and resilience as an entrepreneur.

In the second episode, Lucy Lloyd, co-founder of Mentorloop explains why she chose to self-fund her business and the pressures and challenges that came with it. Lloyd stresses the importance of authenticity and seeking external validation. She also emphasizes maintaining a balance between profitability and growth.

Working with Day One on Unfunded was an incredible experience. I’m proud that I can shine a spotlight on the incredible entrepreneurs in a tech sector that has become too reliant on institutionalised venture capitalism,” Westenberg said.

“Sheree’s and Lucy’s stories show the grit, ingenuity and perseverance it takes to scale a business without conventional funding.” Their experiences are a great example for anyone who wants to build a successful business in their own way.
