Rail Freight Group launches manifesto for UK transport sustainability

The Rail Freight Group has announced the launch of its “Delivered by Rail Freight” manifesto. It aims to highlight the critical role that rail plays in transporting essential items throughout Great Britain. The campaign highlights the collaborative effort between government and key rail freight stakeholder to increase freight transportation via rail, while addressing economic and environmental goals.

According to the manifesto private sector railway freight is a key player in building homes, infrastructure, and supporting carbon reduction targets. It also stimulates economic growth across UK regions.

The key objectives include expanding rail freight capability by assisting new companies in adopting rail transportation, investing in advanced infrastructure, locomotives, and wagons, and integrating data driven technologies to enhance operational efficiencies.

The RFG proposes that the government make strategic investments in rail infrastructure. This includes funding for electrification and other projects that reduce carbon emissions while improving air quality.

Maggie Simpson OBE is the Director General of RFG. She said: “Expanding the rail freight network across the country will facilitate the transfer of essential goods onto rail, boosting both the economy as well as the environment. The rail freight industry is committed to growth, and invests in facilities, equipment and technology, as well as people and skills. We are calling on a new government to match our ambitions through interventions that will help rail freight thrive.”

The manifesto, and its accompanying campaigns, aim to highlight the diverse contributions made by rail freight in Britain. These range from construction materials and consumer goods such as cars and wine. The initiative aims to advocate for policies and funding frameworks which encourage the growth of rail cargo in the country.
