A bill of lading, at its most basic level, is a document that’s required to move a shipment. The bill of lading has legal force and gives the driver and carrier all the information they need to invoice and process the freight shipment.

A bill of lading usually includes the final destination of the freight, contact information for each party involved, special instructions from the shipper for the freight, special instructions from the receiver for the freight, signatures whenever freight is exchanged, and records of condition of freight when it is handed off.
