Transport Canada has introduced the Driver Distraction Mitigation Program for commercial vehicle drivers, providing motor carriers and drivers with tools and training to help reduce the risks associated with distracted driving.
Developed in partnership with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, the free program offers evidence- and research-based guidance on implementing distraction reduction strategies, equipping drivers with skills to better manage their attention on the road, Transport Canada said in a release.
The program provides motor carriers with two key resources: an implementation guide to help fleets launch a distraction mitigation program; and driver training material designed to educate drivers on the causes and consequences of distraction.

The implementation guide includes best practices for developing company-wide distraction policies, integrate distraction management strategies into their safety culture and develop a risk management system that identifies and tracks distraction-related incidents. It also provides instructions on delivering effective driver training and incorporating refresher courses to reinforce key lessons over time.
Meanwhile, the 45-minute training program for drivers explains the science behind driver distraction, detailing how cognitive overload, multitasking, and external distractions increase accident risks. It covers Canadian regulations, common myths about driver distraction, and strategies to help drivers maintain focus.
Fleets can choose between two versions of the training, one for companies that permit hands-free phone use and another for those that prohibit it.
Training is available as a self-guided module with voice-over or as an instructor-led session with speaking notes for group delivery. A refresher course is also included, which fleets are encouraged to administer annually.
