CUMBERLAND, Md. Infrastructure improvements at CSX’s Cumberland Yard will increase capacity, allowing railcars to move through the yard that previously could not.
The company announced in a press release that the yard would be reconfigured to improve safety , productivity and allow the railroad to better manage the increased traffic headed for the Midwest.
The hump and hump tower are removed and new tracks added to optimize switching.
Mike Cory (CSX Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer) said that the Cumberland Yard is crucial to the CSX network of freight transportation, as it connects the Northeast corridor and Midwestern territory.
According to the release, the changes are expected to be completed by the end the year. They will allow the company to assemble cars on two automated tracks, while moving other vehicles. This will reduce car handling, double their production capacity, and ensure faster and more reliable deliveries of customer goods.
Cory said, “By improving the network’s flow and increasing the capacity of freight-rail traffic we can eliminate thousands and millions of miles of out-of route miles for Midwest-bound cargo.”
The company plans to make similar improvements at yards in Willard (Ohio) and Hamlet (N.C.).
